Around 2004, when I launched this site, a lively community of classical-music blogs was in the process of formation. The spread of social media sent that cozy world into decline, although some bloggers remain vigorously active — Lisa Hirsch, Mark Berry, Simon Cummings, and Charles Downey, to name a few. Of late, an increasing number of voices, some new and some thoroughly familiar, have converged on Substack. Such erstwhile blogging heavyweights as Steve Smith, Tim Rutherford-Johnson, and Joshua Kosman are in residence. The great Paul Griffiths, who has been observing new music longer than most of us have been alive, has launched what music! I also follow Ben Gambuzza, George Grella, Corinna da Fonseca-Wollheim, Max Keller, Emery Kerekes, Vivien Schweitzer, Olivia Giovetti, Gabriel Kahane, Damon Krukowski, and — occasionally and brilliantly holding forth on music — Garth Greenwell. Their keen commentary compensates, to some degree, for the precipitous decline in newspaper and magazine criticism that has taken place over the past two decades.
